Shoot 3: Studio Portraits
Planning
Planning for this shoot was simple now that I had figured out the lighting style I wanted to use and compositions, I only needed to find myself models who I could photograph. Luckily enough I had people visiting with friends in Bristol so I used this to my advantage and asked to photograph them. They agreed and were intrigued by the images I had already created. They each had their own individual hairstyles and were all older than my previous models, which I was excited about because it would give my project more variety. I also asked around within photography to see if anyone would be interested in having their portrait taken and organised for two people to pose for some photographs. I realised that the people I have been choosing have been random and often people I know. I'm trying to figure out whether this is a bad thing or not, because at the moment I have photographs of lots of people I know and not many of people I don't. I'm considering whether I need to pick each model very carefully depending on their hairstyle and how they wear it, whether this project is focusing on extreme hairstyles and extreme constructions of self, or whether its focusing on everyone in general, whoever I can find, because its how everyone wears their hair, and how we are all so different, whether we wear our hair in a traditional way or not. I am going to keep shooting whoever I can for now and maybe research into whether or not to be picky with who I choose in the next term, incase it would make the project more powerful and the images more consistent.
This shoot went really well again. I feel as though this is because I have decided the lighting style and background colour I want within the images and now the shooting strategy is simple: setting up the lights, dressing the model, composing the image and taking the photo, and then onto the next pose and eventually the next model. Due to this strategy, I am able to photograph a number of people within each shoot, meaning that I am building up a large amount of work with a variety of people, all leading towards my final piece. This shoot was very much a female shoot, mainly due to who my models were, but I didn't think this to be a problem as in my last shoot I photographed 3 men which gave the project even more variety.
I am going to continue shooting in this way, trying to build up an index of hair, or even an index of hairstyles, seeing it in a grid format when viewed as a final piece. For this project deadline I will place them in a book but next term I am going to look more into how to position them alongside each other and whether they need to be printed large, so that every detail and texture of the hair can be seen.
