Alec Soth - Sleeping by the Mississippi.
Soth uses the river as a tributary through which to examine the diversity of the people who live along it. His work focuses on a structure which allows him to look into a place and the people that inhabit it, similar to my ideas on a sense of place. |
Sense of Place
Following on from my last project, I am interested in looking into the sense of a place through the lens. I recently followed the Severn Beach railway line, photographing my own sense of the place and each stop along the line, using the railway as a solid structure to follow for my project. To develop this idea into another project, I would look into another solid structure and capture a sense of place using the structure to form the body of work. Obviously this project would take a lot of time and money to create and the place/area/structure I was following would have to be of great importance to me and need to be thoroughly researched and scouted. I feel as though I don't have the right amount of time for this project, when needing to be at university, using the facilities to create this project and therefore I would not have enough time to create work to suffice for a location that may be too far away from the facilities I need to use. |
Abandonment
I've tried looking into abandoned buildings surrounding where I live, capturing them in different lights and trying to figure out who inhabits these abandoned buildings at different times of the day, whether it is sunlight, cloud, animals, insects or even walkers and people. After looking at this I began to find odd objects in these abandoned places which caught my eye and could make for interesting still life photography, which I haven't excelled in yet and may be a good skill to learn. I feel very strongly about this project as an idea, however again it means travelling to abandoned places of interest, getting involved in what could be considered as trespassing and maybe creating work which is rushed and therefore looks poor because of timing and location. Lidia Giusto - The Dark Room of My Mind.
Lidia Giusto's work focuses on forgotten buildings, using light to create contrasting shadows, giving off a mysterious, eerie sense to the place. Her work touches on the idea that abandoned spaces are all around us and that everyone experiences abandonment in different ways, but most signs just pass us by without a thought because they don't mean anything personally. "My photographs are like industrial and urban archaeology, research of traces of what once existed, and still exists today." |
Textures
Most of my work is very clear and composed portraits, but within them I continuously consider the colours and textures I capture. I would like to look into these colours and textures and perhaps try and make some of my work more abstract, looking very closely (maybe using a macro lens) to capture every detail of an object/thing, to change how we perceive it initially. An idea leading on from this of macro textures is looking into mirrored textures within nature and the human body, looking at shapes, textures, colours and maybe even imperfections that are mirrored within natural beauty of landscape and nature, but perhaps perceived unattractive on the human body. Orjan Henriksson
Orjan Henriksson's work on texture is very formal, looking into light, tone, texture and often shadows. His work shows his patience as he waits for the light to fit the image, allowing it to pop out anything that is the focus. This image of his to the right inspires my work into textures immensely because it looks into both the man made and the human body, juxtaposing them, showing the contrasting textures and also shapes, using the light to make it look like a painting. |
Hair
I've wanted to create a project on hair because I mainly create personal work and this would relate back to my personal experiences. I want to look into hair colour and hair loss, bringing in my own experience along with others whose previous experiences i can reenact and recreate through photographs.
