Final Major Project Proposal
For my FMP I am going to continue with the work I have started in this module, focusing on the subject of hair, creating a broad study of how people wear their hair, and how they construct their identity, using their hair as an accessory. I will first explore more subjects within hair that I haven't already been able to explore, alongside continuing my successful portraiture shooting from this module. I want to continue the portraiture side of this project but with a specific focus on who I photograph, communicating with people who have a personal connection to their hair, or decorate their hair in an extreme way, asking them why they wear their hair as they do and what kind of identity they think it creates for them. I will explore this throughout different races, cultures, religions and ages to get a rounded idea of hair construction, in relation to these different categories, exploring the meaning behind why they are different. The main focus of the project will stay the same as it has been this year, and I still want to create a study of hair, but I will make sure the people I shoot are specific, along with the objects of choice and the different locations used within the work. In terms of a creative approach, I will again continue as I have been, using the studio for portraits, or manipulating the light wherever the shoot is situated, making sure each and every image has a visual connection as well as a conceptual one. In terms of resources, I will need the studio, either the Mamiya Leaf, Hasselblad or Mamiya 7 camera to capture my images with and a tripod to keep the camera stable and my images clear and focused. Research-wise, I want to put more emphasis on the contextual research, exploring the connection people have with hair, its materiality and how body constructions are influenced, figuring out the why of hairstyles and hair construction and not so much the how. I haven't thought of a target audience for my work specifically as I often want the work to be viewed as both aesthetically pleasing and contextually. However, for this project I feel as though I will start to aim it towards photographers, academics (in terms of the subject of the research) but also people will a similar interest in either hair or broad studies of subjects, whether it is hair or another field of study. I can see the final piece being a professionally made book alongside large prints on a wall. This will allow me to put all the genres together within one publication and create a concise ending to the project.

Here is my current work alongside an artist who I have found after shooting these images, who has inspired the next step of my project, looking more closely at the hair in the image rather than the whole person.
